Traveling Gourmet: COCKTAILS GONE WILD IN THE USA

by Rich Rubin

While we’ve seen (and drunk) about a million versions of a mojito or martini, a Manhattan or a Singapore Sling, my favorites are those that really push the envelope, both visually and in terms of taste.

KISS MY ASTEROID
OPIUM BAR LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

You’ll have fun seeing “Opium,” the spacethemed extravaganza playing at Las Vegas’ Cosmopolitan. You might have even more fun visiting the bar, where you find a series of wild cocktails carrying the tongue-in-cheek space theme of the show itself. With the same humor and lack of boundaries as the play, these drinks take familiar cocktails and stand them on their heads, serving them up in hilariously fun incarnations. Mixologist Mariena Mercer worked with the creators of the show to create a unique series of libations with names like Astrofizzics and Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster, but my favorite (both because of the cocktail itself, and, I have to admit, because I love the name): Kiss My Asteroid, a concoction of peach nectar vodka, lychee liqueur, strawberry-fig leaf “space jam,” champagne, and a little gift of pop rocks for some extra fizz. Served in a space-age plastic pouch with a brightlyhued straw, it actually tastes amazing enough to send you into another dimension of pleasure. 3708 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas NV.
