Traveling Gourmet: COCKTAILS GONE WILD IN THE USA

by Rich Rubin

While we’ve seen (and drunk) about a million versions of a mojito or martini, a Manhattan or a Singapore Sling, my favorites are those that really push the envelope, both visually and in terms of taste.

NO JUDGING
JUNIPER COCKTAIL LOUNGE LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

Juniper Cocktail Lounge

This new bar at the Park MGM has two drinks I just can’t resist. My favorite is No Judging (just the name alone makes it worth a try!). As I sit on one of the velvet couches in the elegant room, my server brings over the drink, made of green chartreuse with fresh pineapple and lime and garnished with a bouquet of fresh mint sprigs. I admire the mint, she leans over and casually ignites it. I gasp involuntarily as a greenish-blue flame rises dramatically from the glass. As the flame eventually dies down, the mint is shiny and only a little the worse for wear, and I can proceed to enjoy the post-drama cocktail, which is mild and alive with the tastes of the fresh fruit and mint. I also love the Carnival, which begins with a glass full of cotton candy that melts to a beautiful sea-green concoction as the drink is poured over it, but for sheer theatrics I’ll take No Judging. 3770 S. Las Vegas Blvd. Las Vegas, Nevada. Tel: 702- 730-7777. www.parkmgm.com
