Crystal Braboy
Tell us about yourself and what you do for a living?
My name is Crystal Braboy and I am a 41-year-old single lesbian who lives in the south suburbs of Chicago. I am a fun and fancy diva, who enjoys all things that are cozy, convenient, tasty, and that give me mellow vibes. I serve as the Chief People, Equity, and Culture Officer for Planned Parenthood of Illinois. I have worked for this life-affirming agency for nearly a decade and have loved every moment of it! It’s easy to work for an organization that honors the humanity of every soul who enters its doors, and that fights on the national stage for access to care for everyone, but especially those who are egregiously marginalized and denied the care that they deserve time and time again. I’ve only ever worked in non-profit because I am a social justice warrior at heart.
How long have you been living in Illinois, and what influenced your decision to live where you do now.
I’ve lived in Illinois all my life, and though from time to time I’ve toyed with the idea of living elsewhere, Illinois is and will always be home. I live in Chicago because it is truly a melting pot that even a lifelong resident could never experience in its entirety. I enjoy “getting lost” in the city on a regular basis and visiting neighborhoods that transport you to what can seem like different parts of the world. During our cherished summer months, the city comes alive with all things magical, musical, cultural, and delicious. I could never ever tire of this city!
What are your favorite places to go for a cocktail and/or dinner?
My favorite places that are located in downtown Chicago for dinner and drinks are Swift and Sons (Steakhouse) and The Aviary (amazingly unique cocktails, with a speakeasy down below). Both are located in Fulton Market and right across the street from one another. I also like RPM Seafood, Maple & Ash, 3 Arts Café and the TimeOut Chicago cafeteria for those times when you really want to try a little bit of everything! Vintrendi Wine Company is an absolute must visit in Park Forest, for some of the best and most flavorful and creative wines you’ve ever tasted, and any of the Lowcountry locations (Lakeview, South Loop, Chinatown) will blow you away with their tasty seafood boils! Tip: also try Happy Lamb in Chinatown for an awesome hot pot experience! I’ll close it out with Maple Tree Inn in Homewood; you’ll honestly forget that you’re not in New Orleans, while enjoying their tasty creole fare.
What cultural attractions are a must see for visitors?
Though all of our museums, whether really large or small and niche, are amazing, I personally think that the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center is a beautiful and unique space that explores the rich and storied history of Black folks in this country, and that everyone who visits this part of Illinois should pay a visit. I also always enjoy catching a show at the Steppenwolf Theater. If you can visit Chicago during the African Festival of the Arts (typically Labor Day weekend), you are sure not to leave disappointed, it is an experience to remember!
A friend is coming to visit you for the first time. Please describe the perfect weekend.
The perfect weekend would include an early trip to Promontory Point for some breathe and chill moments, followed by a tasty lunch a Mesler in Hyde Park (it’s just too close not to go by and indulge!), then we’d head to Allyu Spa for some rubs! The weekend would definitely have to also include some Southside action: pina colada Italian ice from Ferro’s, good BBQ from I-57, or tasty soul food from Cleo’s (and maybe a walking tour of Beverly to walk off the calories) followed by some mellow rooftop action (Upstairs at The Gwen anyone?) and catching a show at City Winery. We’d also be sure to catch late-night vibes at The Wild Hare, which has a great live music and dancing space, and even better jerk chicken!
What are the best places to truly enjoy the natural beauty of the area?
Chicago really is a picturesque city nearly everywhere you go, but I find that I appreciate it the most when I’m viewing it near a body of water, either on one of Chicago’s many lakefront areas that are clean and open spaces for sitting, walking, riding bikes, or putting your toes in the sand, or on an architectural tour boat that sails along the Chicago River, or simply walking along the Riverwalk. A hidden gem on the South Side that I like to lift up to visitors is the Garden of the Phoenix, a Japanese garden just near the Museum of Science and Industry.
What locally made product would you suggest visitors bring back for their family and friends?
I don’t think that you should go home without visiting the original Home Run Inn Pizza location, falling in love with it (it gets my vote for best Chicago pizza, with Italian Fiesta coming in a close second), and then figuring out how to get the frozen version (which is just as good) when you’re back at home! Oh, and make sure to also grab some 312 Beer!
Please finish this sentence: Don’t leave Illinois without…
…exploring Chicago (and the state) via our public transportation system (CTA/Metra/Amtrak)! Illinois hosts the best PT system in the country, and it is extremely user-friendly. It’s the best way to experience the people, the sights, and to get wherever you want to go without any hassle at all. We’re very proud of its accessibility and the way that it invites you to explore without barriers.
