Passing through a pair of massive wood doors on a quiet side street in Le Marais and entering a cobblestone courtyard is Galerie Karsten Greve. Representing a roster of A-list artists including Cy Twombly, Lucio Fontana, Sally Mann, and John Chamberlain, Karsten Greve is one of the oldest and most prestigious galleries in Le Marais. Born in Germany and studying law and art history at university, Greve started collecting art at a young age. His first acquisition in 1966 was a Cy Twombly painting. By age 23 he had already purchased major works by Beuys, Fontana, Yves Klein, DeKooning, Cornell, and Kounellis, and unsurprisingly he went on to feature the same artists in his gallery in later years. After opening his first gallery in Cologne with a partner, he came to Paris to open a second gallery.A virtual art pioneer in Le Marais, he inaugurated the gallery in 1989. Greve is credited with bringing Louise Bourgeois worldwide recognition by hosting her first exhibition in Europe, and he is known for his close, personal relationships with his artists.
